Diary entry 9 Tagging

In this diary entry it describes the young girl’s misfortune on how she was forced into tagging for a particular gang in her area. The young girl lives in the ghetto in long beach and her neighbourhood is surrounded by gangsters and drug dealers. It also emphasises the racial tension in her neighbourhood because the gangs rule the streets. These gangsters cannot be ignored otherwise you could be shot or killed.

Tagging is something that many people think is bad and it should not be allowed. But I strongly disagree and think of it this way if these particular teens were not tagging then what would they get up to. In this particular diary entry she says that her only option was to tag otherwise she would have to become a drug dealer. Is this what we as a society want our children to become drug dealers, that’s all the cops need are more people to put into jail, other gang members have more targets and the cemetery will need more land. Would you want your children home for dinner or in a grave?

Yes tagging looks absolutely dreadful when driving past a wall, but you could ask the taggers to become creative and make some wall art whilst tagging. In South Africa when I was in the car and had to go through Soweto and the ghettos, we would go through a high wall with tags all over it and they turned all of these tags into wall art. It looks a lot better that just a spray of black paint. I personally think that it will keep them occupied and stop most of the violence within the community.
Some children like tagging it give them a thrill, so let them do it. Let them do what the love and it will become better and some people may make it a career.
